Word Pet Peeve #1: Ironic

Go to the 27" mark to hear the conversation where Castle corrects the man on his use of irony.
From Merriam-Webster:
Definition of IRONY
Alannis Morrisette stated it with her song Ironic, and the word has been mangled ever since. For the next month pay attention to when people use the word ironic and you'll probably find that in none of the situations irony actually exists.
You'll hear the redundancies: That's a little ironic. It's so ironic! That's a very ironic story.
The comedian Ed Byrne has a famous bit dissing Alannis Morisette on her song Ironic but he gets it wrong a couple of times. Rain on your wedding day isn't ironic if your spouse was a meteorologist who picked the day. Rain on your wedding day is ironic if the rain made the wedding better.
Ed Byrne does get it right by pointing out that a non-smoking sign in your break room is ironic if you work in a cigarette factory.
I remember going to my cousin Dick's office in Manila when he was the marketing director for R.J. Reynolds. I had to wait a bit and I thought I should go out and have a smoke while I was waiting. I was just about to leave when I remembered where I was. I then asked the receptionist for an ashtray.
My favorite example of someone correcting someone about the use of irony is in the show Castle. A therapist is murdered and a patient discovers the body. The patient says that it's ironic that she is dead rioght when he needs her most. Castle's reply:
It's a common mistake, but it's not ironic that Dr. Cosway's not here for you to lean on. It's just simply tragic. It would be ironic if her death made you feel better.
